Help finding, labeling, and recovering your things.

Practical steps for portable backups, personal iCloud sync, QR labels, and permissions. ToteTally has no app-specific account or password to reset.

Create a portable backup

  1. Open ToteTally and choose Settings.
  2. Choose Export and Restore.
  3. Choose Export Full Backup.
  4. Save the ToteTally backup package somewhere you control, such as Files or external storage.

The package includes locations, containers, items, stable identifiers, and available photos. Keep the file private: it is a copy of your household inventory. Export a fresh copy after meaningful changes and before erasing or replacing a device.

Restore a backup

  1. Open Settings → Export and Restore.
  2. Choose Restore a Backup and select a ToteTally backup package.
  3. Choose whether to import it alongside local data or replace the device inventory.
  4. Review the completion message before closing the screen.

Replacing the device inventory is destructive. Export the current inventory first if you might need it later. ToteTally validates the complete package before changing live data.

Personal iCloud sync

What does iCloud sync do?

When your Apple Account and CloudKit are available, ToteTally can keep a private inventory snapshot and photo assets in Apple iCloud for personal recovery and your own Apple devices. Local data remains available offline.

What should I check if sync is unavailable?
  1. Confirm the device is signed in to the intended Apple Account.
  2. Confirm iCloud Drive is enabled and the device has a working connection.
  3. Check available iCloud storage and Apple system status.
  4. Open ToteTally again; best-effort sync retries after local changes and app launches.
Does iCloud sync share my inventory with other people?

No. ToteTally’s launch version does not offer household invitations or member access. Personal iCloud sync is independent of sharing.

Continue making portable exports even when iCloud is working. ToteTally cannot confirm that Apple’s separate device backup completed.

QR labels

Create, print, or share a label

Open a container, choose its QR label action, then print with AirPrint or use the system share sheet to save or send the label image. The QR contains only an opaque container identifier, not your item list.

Scan a label

Open the Scan tab, choose Scan Label, and point the camera at a ToteTally QR. You can also choose a QR image from Photos. The matching inventory must already exist on that device through local restore or personal sync.

A label does not open a container

Confirm it is a ToteTally label, the image is sharp and well lit, and the matching inventory is on the device. A label is not a web link and does not download another person’s inventory. Replace a damaged label from the container screen if needed.

Camera, Photos, microphone, and notifications

iOS permissions can be reviewed in Settings → Apps → ToteTally. Enable only the features you want to use. Text entry, core inventory, and search work without photo, camera, microphone, or notification permission.

  • Camera: photograph stored items or scan a label.
  • Photos: choose item or container photos and QR images.
  • Microphone and Speech Recognition: speak item lists.
  • Notifications: receive optional local revisit reminders.

Email support@totetally.app. Include the ToteTally version, iOS version, device model, what you expected, and what happened. Do not attach a full inventory backup unless support specifically asks for it and you are comfortable sharing its contents.

Public App Store and Google Play listings are not available yet.
